Exhibition - 1st of February

'February' always seems like an odd spelling to me.

Anyway! I'm set for a week long exhibition at the Glasgow School of Art with my peers, except there is no press release as of yet. I'm not entirely sure why, that is, but I'm not all that worried.

All that matters is that it will be this coming Monday, and I have everything sorted.
Expect a overveiw next week, here's a grainy teaser image until then.

:( or easier said 'colonopenbracket' is a Scotland-based Fake-Bit/Powerpop front with one previous album.

The second album titled 'World Wide Web' was released on Christmas day and can be digitally obtained here with cover art from yours truly. It f

eatures slower beats than earlier tracks and a noticeably more tongue-in-cheek approach to pop.

The front image was a combination of :('s ideas and nagging, my own work and a last-minute rush. Not only have I been a fan since my teens, it's probably my faveourite thing I've painted in a long time; and isn't the only music-related illustration planned for the winter.

Fold Magazine

This week something exciting happened,

I got the first edition of Fold Magazine!

Fold is a non-profit, student run magazine that was very recently set up to unite the university of The Glasgow School of Art.

Fold is entirely reader-run and slightly unpredictable. Part student newsletter, part zine, part art review and then some.

I had the pleasure of illustrating Esme Armour's article on our University's recent and mysterious course 'Digital Culture' (seriously, nobody outside of it knows what it is). I didn't expect to be getting such a large space! It nestles amongst reviews for art shows, gig promotion, creative writing, a comic and much more.

Remember a very, ver long time ago when I mentioned having prints on the way? No?
They're done!

Say hello to 'Bird Faced Girl'! Not that she has a bird for a face... They've actually been done for an awfully long time, but alas, I left them in the other end of Britain by mistake. Finally they've been photographed and put up on the ♥iKo Shop.

Social Media?

I'm not too great with forcing myself upon people online, as for offline, well... Maybe if I was stronger.

That's my excuse for why it's taken me so long to add Twitter and Facebook to my social media list (which only included MySpace before, how modern).
I can't seem to get to grips with Twitter, so as for a Google+ page, expect one in a decade or so.

Papergirl Newcastle

Papergirl is the brainchild of Aisha Ronniger in Berlin, 2006, where art was freely distributed to random members of the public by bike-riders.
The other day saw the English city of Newcastle open it's own Papergirl exhibition at Settledown Cafe. The bike riders have yet to set off, but the work has come in both quality and quantity!

I first heard about the project from one of the to-be cyclists but decided to wait until the event reached it's Glasgow invocation before taking part.
Lo and behold! I then found myself in Newcastle just a few days before the submission deadline, the lovely co-ordinators were far too forgiving in letting me take part at such an inconvinient time. I couldn't help but rush out a little drawn piece to hand over! (shown)

The opening night of the event saw familiar and fresh faces from the North East's art scene, happy to pack out the little cafe despite the drizzle. There were some beautiful prints, paintings and drawings that frankly put my last minute effort to shame- I'll try harder next time!
Aside from the standard free drinks expected at any Art function, there were stickers, bowls of sweeties and pens provided. Frankly Awesome.

PUSSY Magazine and me

Founded by Hells Gibson, PUSSY is an online magazine (that sometimes takes physical, full colour form) for girls about all the girliest things. They've got fashion, beauty, art, advice, gossip and a filthy mouth.

I first read about PUSSY on a flyer on a club toilet wall, I then actually spent a couple of weeks with Hells in a screenprinting studio without knowing it at the time.
(But we both noticed each others' nails, she's a proper nail pro' ♥)
After catching her awesome fun yet bold work at the GSA 2011 Degree show it was great to meet her and then a copy of the infamous PUSSY.

To add to the joy of it all I'm now a PUSSY girl myself , which means I'll be blogging on the online magazine myself. I hope I can do a good job, I've never found myself particularily successful as a girl as such but I'll try my hardest!

New Prints on the Way

I've been working on some new designs to hand silk screen, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome of the drawing, but the screen disintegrated on the first print!

Hopefully next time I won't be unlucky and I should have some lovely prints for you guys. Keep watching. (And maybe even some pants...)

Edinburgh and Amelia

Amelia of Amelia's Magazine set off on a UK tour to promote the realease of her 'Commpendium of Fashion Illustration'. An ecologically friendly-faced illustrated look at fashion design and production.

We popped over to Edinburgh to see her talk at The Fruit Market Gallery and also managed to snagged a photo after the cake and crits were over.

Top Floor Takeaway Overview

With the whole flat's belongings moved into one room, a forest errected and the formation of a giant bed, the one-night-only show went on to be a total success with more than eighty visitors and full of music, art, cushions and cake.

A tumblr archive of all the photos of the night has been set up here, hopefully it will also be added to even more over time as images resurface.

Top Floor Takeaway: art happening

We've been working on this one so much that we've been sleeping with our work, if you're in Glasgow you might as well come and see what it's all about. The facebook event page is here.

Topfloor takeaway is the lovechild of Elizabeth Hudson and her artschool flatmates (hello!), responding to domestic space and the possibilites it offers and denies.
There's three rooms set as installations in their own right as well as a spattering of works on display in the centre and lots of suprises in store- it's going to be a busy night.
Participating artists include:

Bryony Jarman-Pinto, Culloden Robertson, Emma Richie Calder, Hugh Pottinger, Liam Mc George, Lizzie Hudson, M-C Redman, Qiqi Loh and Rosie O'Grady.

Halfway: Part I & II Overveiw

The curation of the space for Part I took a trialing two days, but the overall effect was well worth it. After that, we left the rest to the Part II group.

The turn-out for both opening nights was brilliant, although I couldn't be there for Part II, I can't remember seeing the Mackintosh gallery as full at any other time apart from at 4th year degree shows.

Pringle of Scotland are to sponsor the catalogue of both shows after they carried out a fashion photoshoot with Tilda Swinton at the venue during the exhibition.

Here at the GSA, my sect of painters have been blessed by a huge mistake of 'the people in charge'- meaning they have to let us exhibit this years work in the Macintosh Gallery. This probably doesn't make much sense, but at this stage of our course, it's a pretty big deal. I've got about a week to be prepared to show off!

Hi internet! I live with some lovely artists, an architect and a biomedical scientist- we're all still in the student form of evolution however we've got big plans. One plan in the process of hatching is known as the glorious TOP FLOOR TAKEWAY art happening. It's all set for the 26th of April, I can't spill the beans too much, too soon but here's a list for now. Art of Nurture 2011

March saw Lloyds TSB's "The Art of Nurture 2011" competition's regional finals. The overall aim of the banks' competition is to combine their current commercial campaigns with giving large opportunities to young artists and donating some money to their courses in the process. My favourite bit was just when the bankers bought me drinks and told me where they got their ties from. The overall finalist is, at the time of writing, yet to be announced but my friend and I were happy to reach the regional finals round for the region of Scotland. Here's me with what you'll have to trust is a depiction of 'working together'. It's sort of just as well we didn't win that, both being from England.

12x12x12

Studying at GSA is pretty useful for being involved in 'a scene', especially when others in my department decide that there's not enough going on.

Hence- 12x12x12!

The premise was simple: The artists each get a 12"x12" (with 12mm width) board and 12 days to work on it. The results were showcased at The Glue Factory on the 1st of March, 2010 before a big party inthe venue.

Another, other new beginning

Another blog! Hurray!
The cause of death for the last ikoart blog is still unknown, but I'm sure it would want me to keep moving onwards and not continually mourn every day.
This links into my future goals:
As of now, since I'm far-too solid in Art school life, there will be a stronger focus on illustration and street arts than the fine side on my site.
I've got some zine projects lined up.
I will be re-launching an online community project too, so stay tuned!
